Discuss: Outward presentation

Posted by wj

I was thinking of writing an article analysing the outward appearance. But I think it is better to leave it to discussion. The floor is open to the bold, the silly, and the downright ridiculous.

Why do we waste money on makeup, accessories, fashionable clothes, or to a greater extent of plastic surgery and botox injections? Is the first impression really that important? Does making oneself presentable a form of self-assurance or self-confidence? Why waste several hundred dollars on something branded(i.e. specs... lol)?

P.S. Where is Joyce, Linda and Laiteck?

Although some may say it's the inner goodness of a person that matters, we all know that when u meet some1 for the first time, it is the first impression-outer appearance that decides if u want to initate a conversation with that person.
The society gives more opportunities to those who look better.
Fashion, peer pressure n the general acceptance of plastic surgery in countries like Korea helped to make such alterations to improve the outer appearance so widespread. A point to consider : With powerful marketing n the growth of many economies-richer consumers. is it even more difficult to find something that is not branded now?

Okay... but how much does a first impression impact you? This is of course the kind of question that varies from person to person. However, if you meet such a person, who judges mainly on the outer appearance and to b so narrow-minded as to forget abt other aspects that makes up a human being, then perhaps it is better nt to be friends with such?

Keep yourself true, with appropriate grooming of course, and you will surround urself with people who are true to you.

Of course, that brings us tot he question of: what is considered 'appropriate grooming'? I, for one, believe that it is to keep the natural boundaries of the human body, such as one that you are born with, and leave it unaltered. Does this apply to people with born problems such as a cleft lip or a growth at a place not normal? If cosmetic surgery improves the quality of life for these people, is there any difference from those who have breast implants, such as those involved in careers that rely on their looks lik actors?
What do you think?

i guess its slightly different, some ppl have cosmetic surgery to better their lives at a basic level which could be survival, if they cant even have a basic job because of their appearance. while others do it to advance themselves to higher level of jobs like acting or modelling.

anyway ppl are naturally attracted to beautiful ppl this is one fact that cannot be denied. after which then character of the person is considered. this is also automatic for ppl who know that beauty is more than skin deep. :D

nice! the blog becoming more active!

"Keep yourself true, with appropriate grooming of course, and you will surround urself with people who are true to you." That is all very true, friends who appreciate ur true self are good friends indeed. But to discover someone's true self it takes a period of interaction. Prior to becoming friends with a stranger what goes through ur mind?
Even if u do enjoy chatting with an online pal, when u managed to come across his/her picture and it turns out to be different from wat u expect, does ur impresion of the person change?
All this points to 1 thing, we judge based on first impression.

Granted after interaction if the person's character irks u, no matter how glam he/her is, u might not want to continue the friendship. But it is for the very reason that first impression matters Alot that many are willing to spend so much time n money to look good.

Regarding cosmetic surgery..
Personally i feel that both parties, those born with physical deformities n those under public eye, are faced with societal pressure.

Perhaps the society looks at those with deformities under a different light treating them as less capable, 2nd-class human beings. Very few jobs are open to them.(eg handicraft sales, lottery ticket sales, etc) No 1 can imagine the sadness they feel when passer-bys give them a pitying look...

Would u argue that artistes should not alter their already normal looks for advancement in career? I know for a fact that in Korea, Fans are so concerned about their idols' look that many forums have open discussions about who has gone under the knife. Forumites blantantly discuss their idols' appearance n strong, powerful languages are used to exhibit their opinions of idols based on look. In fact there are many sucide cases of Korean Artistes who cannot handle the pressure from press n fans.

Perhaps U think tt these Artistes shouldnt let other's opinions affect them so much? That they should try to live with it or find another job which doesnt come with such pressure?
What if their passion is in acting? Just because of such negativity they cannot pursue what they really want?
